Norley C of E Primary School

Norley Village School dates back to 1836 when a Sunday school was opened by Samuel Woodhouse ESQ of Norley Hall, by 1844 there were more than 100 children accessing an education here. With the concept of a village school as the hand maid of the church, producing a moralising influence on village life, the first application to the National Society (London) was made by the Rev. W Huddon and resulted in a grant for £20 for fittings and apparatus in the school building. At that time the school was still funded by subscriptions of the few and Children’s Pence.

A school endowment trust was established in 1860 through the generosity of Hon.Arthur Lascelles of Norley Bank and in 1914 an addition to the site was acquired for the school playground.

The 1944 Education Act legalised the partnership between the Church and State, Parish and Local Authority, in educational provision. Compulsory Religious Instruction and daily acts of worship were introduced but were already operative in Norley Church School.

In 1955 the increasing costs of the building repairs and maintenance of the old Victorian building, with inadequate facilities led to an application for 'Controlled Status', which was granted and led to a closer relationship with Cheshire Local Education Authority and introduced a revised system of management.

In 1968 a new site (Hough Lane) was acquired by Cheshire LEA for a replacement school as there were problems with remodelling and extending the existing site, due to its location. Plans were published in 1973/4 but were aborted due the current financial constraints on public funds.

In 1986/7 plans for a new, modern school building on the Hough Lane site were executed with the school retaining its status as a Church Of England School. 1989 saw the move from the old school building into a fully equipped building with modern facilities.

Norley CE Primary School came under threat in 2005/6 when the local authority undertook a process named TLC (Transforming Local Communities). There was a rationalisation of school places and Kingsley St John, along with Norley CE Primary School were both earmarked for amalgamation. The governing bodies of both schools opposed this and put up an alternative proposal to form a 'Hard Federation', under the leadership of just one headteacher and one governing body. This required Norley to change from Voluntary Controlled to Voluntary Aided status. Both school sites remained open but over the years their own identities and needs became very different. When the headteacher moved on, the governing bodies chose to de federate and go back to having a headteacher each and separate governing bodies again.

Norley CE Primary School is served by loyal and efficient staff, managed by responsible governors, supported by the Diocese , CDAT and caring parents with strong links to our church and community. We are well prepared for making sure our children have the best start to their education with firm foundations to build upon.

– By providing high quality teaching and learning that allows children to reach their full potential.
– By ensuring that all children have access to a rich and balanced curriculum that is inspiring and involve the children having a variety of learning experiences including learning through play and hands on experiences.
– By enriching our curriculum with learning outside the classroom including trips out, visitors and using our beautiful ground to their full extent.

Educating for Hope and Aspiration

We want our children to celebrate and appreciate diversity, fostering qualities that encourage every child to have aspiration for a society in which every individual is cherished.
– By knowing all children treating them as individuals to provide personalised learning that takes into account individual needs and different learning styles.
– By having clear and high expectations that match the stage of development of the child.
– By striving for our children to be more effective and independent learners.
– By encouraging resilience in our children when things are challenging.

Educating for Community and Living Well Together

With our Christian belief at its heart, we work in partnership with each other, families, the church, the local and wider community to create a stimulating and caring environment, where everyone is welcomed, nurtured and empowered.

– By providing a happy, caring and stimulating school in which children are highly motivated in a safe environment.
– By having an open door for parents and promoting an honest and trusting home-school relationship, which is invaluable for our children to thrive in school.
– By welcoming everyone into our school family and modelling the good behaviour that we expect, through the teachings of Jesus.
– By enabling children to acquire skills they will need to thrive as children and adults in our ever changing world.

Educating for Dignity and Respect

Christian values directly inspire and influence the children to recognise their self-worth and flourish, enabling them to make the right choices that will continue to shape their lives.
– By promoting Christian Values so all children have respect for themselves, others and their environment.
– By living the Christian Values that underpin the whole curriculum we offer in our school; enabling us to show respect and understanding for other beliefs.
– By being inclusive ensuring all pupils are given equality of opportunity regardless of gender, special needs, disability or race.
